13 Natural Home Remedies for your Kids that Work

On Sunday, we were sitting around the kitchen table and we started talking about home remedies that we have used through the years. Its great to know what works because a lot times, something will happen and you don’t have time to go to the store or its so late the store isn’t open!

It’s always better to use something natural, if it really works! I have used several of these remedies on my own kids but I also did my homework to see what I could find.

Sore Throat: Lemon dries up the congestion and honey provides a soothing coating. Mix together a tablespoon of each, microwave for 20 seconds until warm ( you don’t want it hot) and have your child swallow the mixture. Remember that honey is not safe for babies under 1 year.

baking-soda aspirin

Bug Bites: You can a paste out of one these items. It will stop the itching and helps the swelling go down. Mix a teaspoon of the baking soda with just enough water to make a paste. The aspirin, just get it wet and play with it with your fingers until it starts to dissolve and it will make a paste. Place it on the bug bite and leave it until it dries.

cayene pepper

Nosebleeds: Cayenne Pepper helps blood clot. Keep your child’s head upright and pinch his nose together for several minutes. Sprinkle a pinch of cayenne on a moistened cotton swab and dab inside the nose on the area that is bleeding. You would think that it would sting but it doesn’t.

ducttape

Warts: This tape seems to irritate warts and inhibit their growth. Gently file the wart and then place a small piece on the skin over the wart. Not too tight, we don’t want it to hurt. Change the tape when it starts to look gross; in about a month, the wart should be gone.

bubbles

Anxiety: Having your child breath slowly and deeply will help them relax. Have your child blow long, slow streams of bubbles from the wand.

bandana

Headaches: You can wrap ice cubes in a towel to help soothe your child’s headache. Remember to never to put the ice directly on to their skin because it will burn. Press gently, against the forehead or temples and secure it with a bandana tied at the back of the neck.

sock

Tummy or Neck Pain: Make your own heat wrap by filling a sock with uncooked rice and tying it closed with a string. Microwave the sock for 1 minute or until warm. Place it wherever your child is having pain. When it cools down, microwave it again!

onion

Earache: Slice a onion in half and place one half in the oven to bake. Make sure its hot and then wrap it in a dish towel. You want to be able to feel the warmth from the onion but you don’t want to burn your child. I’ve even tried this on myself and it works so well!

ginger

Upset Stomach: For children ages 2 and older, add a teaspoon of shredded fresh ginger to 1/2 cup of boiling water and let it sit for 4 to 5 minutes. You can add a little bit of homey to make it taste better. After it has cooled, have your child drink it. This works for pregnant women.

Cucumber on White

Mild Swelling: Cool cucumber slices will help soothe hot, swollen skin. Place a slice anywhere your child has minor swelling. Simple replace it with another slice when the slice becomes warm.

chewing gum

Indigestion: Children 4 or older, have them chew some gum when they complain of a full stomach after a meal. The extra saliva will neutralize the extra stomach acid.

feet

Stinky Feet: I have had several kids that have had this problem and I have tried many things. First, wash your feet! Sometimes I think, they think their feet are clean if water touches their skin. They need to scrub with a washcloth and use anti-bacterial soap. Second: Dry your feet, dry them completely. Moisture, whether it’s water or sweat, is what creates bacteria. Third: Use hand sanitizer. It can kill the germs on your feet.

Cold Sores: We are a family that get tons of cold sores! I even get one the size of Texas! This really works!!! Take as directed on the bottle. I would suggest this for older children.

I also like to put Vick's Vapo Rub on my temples when I get sinus pressure. It's not all natural, but it's better than taking pills (unless it's really bad. The. i'm not above taking pills.)
