Cake decorating basics
When I married my husband, 13 years ago, I didn’t know the first thing about baking cakes. My awesome mother-in-law, Julie, was an amazing cake maker and I just had to know her secrets!
It seemed like there are SO many things to know when decorating cakes, but Julie assured me that I could do it. I just had to start with the cake decorating basics!
The first thing that Julie (my awesome mother-in-law) taught me was how to keep your cakes from sticking in the pan. I had no idea there was a science to it, but there are my friends, there is!
First, start by preheating your oven. You want it to be ready when you are!
Next, THE MOST IMPORTANT and FIRST cake decorating basics is to get your pans ready for the cake mix. Start by using a paper towel to spread shortening all over inside the pan. Go CRAZY, you have to get every nook and cranny. Make sure you cover the pan to the top because your cake will rise!
After you grease your pan, grab a tablespoon or two of flour and sprinkle it into your pan.
Shake and tap the pan to nudge flour into every nook and cranny until every spot of shortening is covered in flour. Dump the excess flour out after the pan is evenly floured.
Pour cake batter into your prepared pans and bake! Wait for 10 minutes after the cake comes out of the oven, then use a butter knife to loosen the cake (gently) from the edges, if necessary.
Finally, cover a baking sheet with wax paper, place it on top of the cake pan, then flip the whole thing over so the cake pan is on top.
Slowly remove the cake pan If it seems like it’s still stuck, you can gently tap the entire pan, including the cookie sheet on the bottom, on the counter.
Everything should come out nicely!
Happy cake decorating.
