DIY Barn Door

Sliding Barn Doors are all the rage these days. I can not wait until I have my own house to decorate my own house! This is our version of a DIY Barn Door!

For my Mom’s birthday, Matt and I decided to build my mom a brand new barn door. She had a beautiful door made by my brothers and dad, but she is remodeling and the door would no longer match her new walnut floors. Luckily, Matt was on fall break so we had the time to build our door. 

Here are a few pictures of our process. First, we went and shopped for the wood, we had to look at each piece and made sure it was straight. Matt is a little bit of a perfectionist and it took us an hour and a half to pick out.

Then, we measured and cut the wood. Measure twice cut once. We sanded each piece and then used a nail gun to put them together. Next, we used wood filler to put in the nail holes and the gaps between the wood slats.

Then we sanded for days, to make it perfectly even on all sides.

Next Matt applied a wood conditioner, let it sit for about 20 minutes. Then we applied the walnut stain. 

We created a spray booth in the garage, first, we screwed nails to the top of the door and attached wires to the screws and the garage door. Then Matt made the booth with his ZipWalls.

Last Matt sprayed a clear satin final coat! It turned out beautiful!

My Mom Loved it! Now we are just waiting for the paint in the house to dry so we can hang it! Stop by to see it on the wall soon!
