I don’t know about you guys, but about 2 times a year I turn into a crazy lunatic that can only focus on getting her house immaculate and organized. 

Even though it’s nearly an insurmountable task, I still strive for perfection. It makes me crazy until it’s done, but when it’s done I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders! It’s so exciting to have everything organized and all the junk thrown out! 

This is our craft/ junk closet. It has been a disaster for a while! I really wish I had taken a before picture, then you would know how much BETTER it looks now!

The kids were always getting into the closet to get out their crayons and coloring books, and they never put things back where they belonged, because it was hard to get into the closet. There was too much stuff in the way, and the drawers on the plastic organizers I had were hard to open. I needed a solution that worked for everyone, so we got to work! It looks awesome now and I’m so excited about it!

Here are my top tips for getting organized on a budget!

First, start small. Start with the easiest closet, drawer, etc… to organize. Once you’ve got that accomplished you’ll feel great and you’ll be motivated to do more! 

Next, when you decide on what space to organize, empty everything out of the space. Everything! This way you can wipe down the shelves or dust them as needed and start with a fresh space. 

Third, separate everything into piles. Paper in one pile, pens in another, ribbon, paint and keepsakes in another. It really just depends on what you’re organizing, but group things together as well as you can. Make sure you’re getting rid of things that you haven’t used in a year, or that you wouldn’t buy or use in the next year. 

Once everything is out of the closet and separated into piles, find a organizational unit that works for you. This shelving unit was free from an office that was closing! SCORE! It was perfect for all the scrap paper and coloring books! 

Don’t spend a lot on organizing a closet! The door is closed the majority of the time and, let’s face it, cheap is better. These blue bins were at the Dollar Store and way cheaper than anything at Walmart. 

Next, place everthing in containers. Clear bins or bins with holes are awesome because you can see what’s in them. You could also make tags or labels for bins that aren’t see through. That way you don’t have to pull everything out to get what you need. 

Finally, everything should have a home. All of my paint supplies and smocks are in their own  bin.  I have a ton of paint, so I also separated the paint into adult paint and kids paint supplies. Then I put the kids’ art supplies on the lowest shelves so they can reach them, and I kept my paint up high!

How you separate your supplies really just depends on what you have, but I would suggest keeping each bin as simple as possible. The more that’s in there, the easier it will be to get disorganized again. 

I’m happy to say that I only have 1 closet left to organize and then my entire home will be de-cluttered! YAY! Oh wait…I haven’t been to the unfinished basement for a while… that’s a story for another day.
