Homemade Double Chalupas
The Double Chalupas are gone at Taco Bell and I am so sad! I decided to make my own Homemade Double Chalupas.
When I was younger I hated Mexican food, literally everything. Then I got pregnant. Now, I can’t get enough! I am always making tacos or eating at Costa Vida and Taco Bell.
Which I used to hate, ask my brothers. Recently, Taco Bell got rid of their double chalupa box and I am so sad about it and I decided I needed to make my own version. Apparently, the shell is Indian fry bread, so I guess I ended up making Navajo tacos. This was amazing and I loved every bite! Give these a try!
Homemade Double Chalupas
Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 onion chopped
- 1 pack taco bell seasoning
- nacho cheese sauce
- sour cream
- chopped romaine lettuce
- chopped tomatoes
Fry Bread
- 4 cups of Flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups hot water
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1-quart vegetable oil to fry in
Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add in the water, mixing with a Kitchenaid mixer bread dough hook. It will be sticky.
- Cover and let rest 2 hours. This is not a risen dough so the dough will not rise, but it does need to rest.
- Drizzle olive oil over the dough. Pull off golf ball-sized pieces of dough and stretch or roll out until very thin, without ripping it. The thinner the better.
- Brown meat with onions until meat is no longer pink. Then add taco bell taco seasoning. Follow the directions on the package.
- Pour enough vegetable oil into a pot to cover it with 2 inches of oil. Heat to 350 degrees F. Meanwhile, warm up the nacho cheese.
- Working one at a time, fry the dough in the hot oil until golden brown, flipping halfway through. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- Top the Indian fry bread with the meat, then nacho cheese, sour cream, lettuce, and then the tomatoes. Or however, you see fit. Enjoy!
These look amazing and remind me of Indian Fry Bread, which is also delicious!!
