Cleaning Headstones

Cleaning Headstones

With Memorial Day coming up I started to think about what I did on Memorial Day. When I was a little girl my great grandma used to go to the cemetery to clean headstones. She’d say that if we didn’t do it we were going to go to heck. So today we decided we’d go out and clean a few of our relative head stones.

Tools Needed:

Spray bottle
Heavy duty rubber gloves
Brushes
Hydrochloric Acid (we got ours at home depot)
Bucket
Water

Alright, all we did was pick a few that had obviously not been cleaned in awhile and started spraying on the hydrochloric acid (make sure to put your gloves on). We let the acid sit for a few minutes and eat away at the hard water spots. You can hear it fizzle and see white bubbles.

Then we started to scrub with our brushes, it kind of gives off a yellow appearance. Reapply as necessary. Then you fill that bucket up with water and make sure you rinse them really well. And there you have it! A clean headstone for Memorial Day!

  3. Thank You for sharing! My Dad's headstone is black and my grandma used Muratic acid and it ate away the finish. We'll have to try this 🙂

  4. My husband and I clean headstones each spring and fall. We use "Wet and Forget" – a great product for any surface. It will not hurt any kind of material – slate, granite, etc. We also use it to clean our house. We get ours at Costco.
