Why I am No Longer a Ninja Mom

After my first child was born, I realized just what a worrier I was always meant to be. The first night home with him was so hard, but it didn’t have to be…You see, the whole night long, I was constantly checking on him to make sure he was breathing. Constantly.

If I’m being honest, the first year of his life was this way. I would sneak into his room, like a total ninja, tip-toeing, rolling across the floor, crawling up to the edge of his crib in order to look for signs of life. Half the time I would wake the poor kid up from his precious slumber time to do this.

My husband thought I was a freak, and he didn’t understand the motherly instinct to always be worried about his mortality. Then we had our second child. She was born 8 weeks early, spent 3 weeks in the NICU and came home from the hospital on oxygen. Her oxygen monitor didn’t work as well as it should so this blasted machine constantly beeped at me!

My heart would race, and once again I was a ninja, doing flips through the air to get to her side and make sure she wasn’t turning blue.

I calmed down a little with my third, but I still snuck into her room every night to “make sure she was alive.”

Now with the new little Miss, everything has changed. I got my hands on an awesome new tool called the Owlet monitor. It’s a little slipper that the baby wears on their foot while sleeping. It is designed to measure your baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels then sends that information via Bluetooth 4.0 to a base station within the baby’s room.

The base station relays the information to the parent’s smartphone via wifi. It monitors their oxygen levels and alerts you if something isn’t reading right. So now, we can sleep comfortably, knowing that the monitor will alert us if something goes wrong. Don’t get me wrong, being a ninja is cool, but I like my sleep a LOT better than I like being a ninja.

The monitor comes in different sizes, and grows with your baby. It fits just like a little shoe, and the baby doesn’t even notice it.            Here’s a link to their website, if you’d like to stop being a nighttime ninja too! My ninja days are over, now I have to find another form of exercise, and that’s fine with me!

  1. Boy I can relate to watching babies all night long worrying they were alive, I was always worried about SIDS, now, this is the neatest thing since pancakes for moms to monitor their babies. Who ever came up with this one is going to ease the minds of millions of moms (not to mention make a fortune)! Even a grandma can appreciate this apparatus for future grand-babies!!

    Have a awesome week!!

  2. Wow, technology is amazing. Wonderful that we have it……..worrying, we have all been through it…I believe its what makes a good mom…whether they were going to school first time, or learning to drive….we worry because we care. But technology is making it easier…beautiful baby, enjoy…

  3. That is so cool! We're past the ninja days now, but if we decide to add another member to our family, I'm so buying this! I even went so far as to try to see if they were breathing in our video monitor – totally impossible to do by the way…..this will bring so much more sanity!
