Top 5 Study Tips from a Teacher
Parents are always asking me what they can do to help their students succeed in my class. I teach Anatomy, it is a lot of memorization. It’s hard to say specifically what will help each student, because there are different learning styles. There are a few things that I think can help everyone! These study ideas only help if you do the necessary work before hand.
First make sure your students takes notes in class. In my class I bold and underline what is important for them to write down. YES it’s okay to shorten and paraphrase the notes. As long as they know what each thing is or does. Do the assignments. I don’t think I can stress how important doing the homework is. I do a few crazy assignments in my class, but they are there to help remember the information. I remember some crazy things because of my randomness. These are both just
precursors to help you succeed on the test!
Top 5 Study Tips from a Teacher
#1 – REVIEW EVERY NIGHT – First thing you need to do is every night after class take 15-30 minutes reading over the notes taken in class that day. Simple, try to focus on what thing does. Read through them 3 or 4 times.
#2 – CREATE FLASHCARDS – Some students say this doesn’t help
them learn anything. Writing the words down several times can help you learn
how to spell the words and remember what they do. Once you have created the
cards, test yourself once or twice a day.
– If there are diagrams for you to memorize, try to find someone online to fill out or ask your teacher for extras to quiz yourself from. Now we have the apps, there’s an app for just about everything you could need. There are apps for Anatomy that quiz you! I know there are apps for other subjects as well.
#3 – HAVE SOMEONE QUIZ YOU – It may feel embarrassing to not
know the information, but you have to learn it some time. I have never learned
more about the human body than I have teaching. Talking through things with my
students helps me remember things, they sometimes come up with the most
creative ways to remember things!
#4 – FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU – There are so many different ways you can study, if you find something that works for you, do it! I not naïve enough to think that I know everything. Put in the time!
#5 – ASK FOR HELP – Despite what some may think, I want everyone to pass. I want the material learned, it makes me look like a better teacher! I love when kids come and ask me for help! It is rare that a teacher will turn away someone who wants to learn the material.

Essentially you are reading the material, writing the material and talking about it! This touches on most learning styles. Put in the work! The teacher wants you to succeed, help yourself!
